Maximum Ugly

Ten finalists have been selected and now it’s time to vote!

There will be TWO $4,000 winners

Winner 1: $4,000 kitchen makeover winner for the kitchen receiving the most votes!
Winner 2: $4,000 kitchen, bath or other cabinet makeover winner drawn from amongst all who vote!

Thank you all for the many Maximum Ugly kitchen photo submissions! We were overwhelmed with the tremendous response!

As explained during the photo submission phase of the contest, all photo entries would be narrowed down to a maximum of 10 finalists. To determine the final 10, all qualifying kitchen photo entries were scored based on 1) the degree of ugliness of the kitchen (the style, color and wear of the cabinets), 2) how dramatic of a change a final transformation would be on the kitchen, and 3) how well the project fit the scope of services Kitchen Refresh provides (the makeover of cabinetry in its existing footprint, and the need for only minor modifications and additions, if any, that also fall within the scope of services of Kitchen Refresh).

Unique code: AZA

This entrant says they just moved into the home last year and would love to see their “new” kitchen updated. She would like soft close doors, more dimension to the cabinets (they are currently flat), and something brighter for the countertops and backsplash. She says the bar/peninsula could use some updates, as they recently removed the original oven that was “awkwardly placed” above the peninsula, and it wasn’t big enough to fit a standard size cookie sheet. “So now we have a giant hole in our cabinet that we would love to transform into a bread box or wine storage,” she says.

Unique code: EXO

This entrant said what she does not like about their cabinets is the green color. She also dislikes the hardware placement in the middle of the cabinetry and how that makes the upper cabinets inaccessible by 3 out of the 4 people in the home. She said the kitchen does not match the rest of the house and is an embarrassment and huge eyesore. When they were house hunting, an updated kitchen was their number one priority, but they couldn’t pass up the quiet cul-de-sac and school proximity when they found this home. Four years later, the ugly kitchen still bugs her. She pleads, “Please pick the algae kitchen!”

Unique code: AKI

This entrant says they’ve been in this house for over 20 years and have always wanted to redo the kitchen. They dislike the closed-in feeling of the dark cabinets. They’ve redone the flooring, and would love to have somebody help them with the planning and completion of the kitchen. “Please Kitchen Refresh, we need your help!” she pleads.

Unique code: OGA

This entrant says they bought this home about a year-and-a-half ago, and gets straight and to the point about how she feels about the kitchen: “I hate my cabinets and countertops!”

Unique code; OCU

This entrant says they bought this house a year ago and dream of new cabinets, “I’m pretty sure these are original to the house, which was built in 1963,” she says. She also shares the wood has a weird sticky feel when you touch them, and they aren’t very functional.

Unique code; USO

This entrant has had this kitchen for 16 years. She laments the cabinets were repainted, and are fading, and whenever she thinks about repainting them again, she remembers how much work it was – even 16 years later. “My counters are 1959 retro, so that’s sweet, too,” she shares.

Unique code: ORO

This entrant shares this is the home that her daughter and she live in by themselves, a “move-on house” from the 1970’s. She says the cabinets make for a very dark kitchen that isn’t inviting. She shares, “My husband and I were planning to update the house this year, but this spring he was killed in a trench accident while working.” She says time and finances are limited now with an unexpected single parent income, and she would love to have an updated, fresh look for the kitchen for her 3-year old daughter and herself. She says, with a kitchen being the heart of the home, she feels updating it would be a fresh start to their lives after such a tragedy.

Unique code: IWO

This entrant says their home has turned into a DIY disaster. She says they have lived in their home about a year and always hated the builder-grade honey oak kitchen. “After reading several tutorials on the magic of gel stain, I took a leap of faith and started in on our cabinets,” she says. “I underestimated the time commitment and, apparently, the skill required for this to turn out well!” She says the result is a streaky mess and she’s not even halfway complete. She says she loves dark, rich cabinets in kitchens and would love for hers to reflect that look.

Unique code: APA

This entrant says they are suffering from a common problem of repainted cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and hardware: “We find paint chips on the floor often. The hardware was also repainted and is chipping off and was to be black, but is now black with gold accents.” She says the countertops were rough cut to fit new appliances, and have jagged edges. She says they use baskets and custom made cutting boards to hide those flaws as well as burn marks, all of which were there when they moved in 3 years ago.

Unique code: EME

This entrant shares her cabinets are boring and have no character. “We tried to put new hardware on them to make them look nicer,” she says, but she dislikes how the handles on the lower cabinets had to be angled, just as the originals were. She also strongly dislikes the super bright orange countertops and that they are chipping everywhere. She also points out the back splash clashes with everything.

Maximum Ugly Kitchen Makeover Contest

The fine print: No purchase necessary to enter and a purchase will not increase your odds of winning. All photo entries were required to be received by midnight CST of Aug. 31, 2018. Two $4,000 prizes will be awarded in the form of non-refundable credit toward a Kitchen Refresh makeover: Up to $4,000 for a kitchen makeover to the ugliest kitchen winner and up to $4,000 for a kitchen, bath or other cabinet makeover for the randomly drawn winner from amongst all those who voted in the 2018 Maximum Ugly contest. Credit can be applied to new doors, new hinges, new drawer fronts, new pull hardware and cabinet painting, all transacted from and completed by Kitchen Refresh and their approved contractors thereof, using Kitchen Refresh products, methods, materials and supplies, up to the maximum value of the winning amount for a makeover project in the winner’s home. All other improvements (countertops, backsplash, flooring, etc.) or additional charges (cabinet box or island additions, any applicable mileage, etc.), and any costs thereof, would be the responsibility of the winner. For photo contestant entrants, only kitchens of a homeowner’s primary residence are allowed, only one entry per household address. To be eligible to participate or win, contest entrants and contest voters must be legal adults whose primary non-rental residence (the home they own) resides within the Kitchen Refresh service areas as described in this contest. Employees, dealers, franchisees, contractors and direct family members of Kitchen Refresh are not eligible to participate. Both winners will be announced on or around Sept. 28, 2018. Prizes have no cash value, therefore any unused balance or forfeiture of prize has no cash value. Winners will be notified by phone and email information provided by entrant and will have 30 days to claim their prize after date of notification. To redeem, winners must have their Refresh makeover fully ordered by Dec. 31, 2018. In the event a Refresh makeover has not been fully executed by that date, prize will be considered forfeited. At Kitchen Refresh’s sole discretion, an alternate winner may be selected. Participants and winners agree to allow us to use their first name and the initial of your last name, community where you reside, and photographs of your kitchen (or other room, in the case of the randomly drawn winner), for promotional and marketing purposes on social media, including but not limited to Facebook, Instagram and Pinterest, as well as the Kitchen Refresh website, and other channels and media as determined by Kitchen Refresh (newspapers, TV stations, etc.). The Maximum Ugly kitchen photo submission winner will be based on the photo receiving the largest number of valid, eligible votes. In the event of a tie, a random drawing will be held amongst all tied photo submission entries. Odds of winning random drawing from vote-based drawing is based on number of entries. Any federal, state, municipal or other taxes, fees or other monies owed or due as the result of being awarded and accepting a prize are the sole responsibility of the winners. We are not responsible for late, missing, or misdirected entries for any reason whatsoever. Other rules and restrictions may apply.
